Retargeting pixel on a short link

Build an audience from clicks that never reach your site

Meta, TikTok, GA4 and Google Tag Manager IDs, set per link and fired on the click itself. A pixel on your website only sees people who arrive there; a pixel on the link sees everyone who opened it.

Quick answer

What is a retargeting pixel on a short link?

A retargeting pixel on a short link is an ad-platform tag that fires when someone opens the link, before they reach the destination. ClikSo carries a Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, GA4 and Google Tag Manager ID per link, injected into a short interstitial page with a 300-millisecond pause so the beacons complete. It builds audiences from clicks that never load a page of yours.

How a pixel on a link works

Five steps, and none of them touch the page you are sending people to.

  1. Copy the ID out of the ad platform

A Meta Pixel ID from Meta Events Manager, a TikTok Pixel ID from TikTok Ads Manager, a GA4 Measurement ID from Google Analytics, or a container ID from Google Tag Manager. You need the ID only — no code snippet, and nothing to install anywhere.

  2. Paste it into the link’s Tracking Pixels panel

Each link carries its own set of IDs, so one campaign can feed a Meta audience while another feeds TikTok. You can set any combination of the four, and add them to a link that is already out in the world without changing its URL.

  3. Share the link wherever the audience is

A text message, a printed QR code, a social profile, a podcast description, a press release. None of those load a page you control, which is exactly why a pixel on the destination site would never see them.

  4. The click fires the tags, then continues

A link carrying a pixel answers with a small HTML page instead of a redirect: it fires the tags you configured, waits 300 milliseconds so the beacons complete, then sends the visitor on.

  5. Build the audience in the ad platform

The people who opened your link are now in the pixel’s data, and the audience is built where you already build audiences — Meta Events Manager, TikTok Ads Manager or Google Analytics. ClikSo does not sit between you and the platform.

What happens in those 300 milliseconds

A link with a pixel answers with a page instead of a redirect. That page is what gives the four tags somewhere to run.

0 ms300 ms
The click arrives. A 200 HTML page comes back with the tags in it.The page bounces the visitor on to the destination.
  • Meta Pixelconnect.facebook.net
  • TikTok Pixelanalytics.tiktok.com
  • GA4www.google-analytics.com
  • Google Tag Managerwww.googletagmanager.com

Each tag domain gets a preconnect hint, and all four tags are given the same window. The pause is the mechanism rather than an overhead: a 302 carries no page, so there would be nothing for a tag to run in.

The four IDs a link can carry

Set any combination of them on any link. Each one is the same ID the platform already gave you — there is no snippet to paste and no verification step.

There is no LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, Snap or Reddit pixel. Four platforms is the whole list.

Where a site pixel can never help you

Every one of these is a click that happens somewhere your website tag will never see.

SMS and messaging campaigns

A text message has no page to tag and no analytics of its own. A pixel on the short link is the only way a tap in a messaging app can ever become someone you can retarget.

The one link in your profile

The link in an Instagram, TikTok or X profile usually points somewhere you do not own — a store listing, a booking page, a partner site. Put the pixel on the link and the audience builds anyway.

Print, packaging and QR codes

A scan from a poster, a menu, a flyer or a box insert. Nothing about the physical object can carry a tag, but the link inside the QR code can.

Links to pages you do not control

Press coverage, an app-store listing, an affiliate offer, a partner’s landing page. You cannot install a pixel on somebody else’s site — you can put one on the link that sends people there.

Podcast and video descriptions

Show notes and video descriptions are read far more often than they are clicked, and the click that does happen is worth capturing. One short link per episode, one audience per show.

Newsletters and email

A reader who clicked a link in your newsletter has shown more intent than one who opened it. A pixel on that link turns the click into a retargetable audience without any change to the page it points at.

Retargeting pixels across link shorteners

We are not the broadest option here, and the table says so — Replug names six ad networks and Rebrandly five, against our four. Where we win is price, and that Bitly does not offer this at all.

Competitor details taken from each provider's own published pricing and documentation, last verified 16 September 2026. Prices are the effective monthly cost of the cheapest plan including the feature, billed yearly where the vendor publishes an annual rate. Short.io gates retargeting to its Pro plan but renders its prices in the browser, so no figure is quoted here. “Not stated” means the vendor never names that platform, not that it is unsupported.

Good to know

  • A link with a pixel is no longer a 302. It returns a 200 HTML page that fires the tags, then bounces the visitor with JavaScript after 300 milliseconds.
  • Four platforms, and no others: Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, GA4 and Google Tag Manager. There is no LinkedIn, X, Pinterest, Snap or Reddit pixel.
  • Pixels are JavaScript tags, so a visitor with JavaScript disabled is still sent to the destination but fires nothing. The same is true of anything that blocks the tag domains.
  • The interstitial shows no consent or cookie banner. If your audience is covered by consent rules, that is something to handle before the click rather than something ClikSo does for you.
  • IDs are set per link, not once for the workspace, so a new link starts with none. There is no bulk way to apply a pixel across an existing set of links.

Tracking pixels by plan

Tracking pixels start on Starter. They use the same interstitial as a custom link preview, so a link with both set costs you nothing extra — and the click is recorded in click analytics either way.

Frequently asked questions

Copy your Meta Pixel ID out of Meta Events Manager, open the link in ClikSo, switch on Tracking Pixels and paste the ID into the Meta Pixel ID field. There is no code to install and nothing to change on the destination site. It works on a link you have already shared, without changing its URL.

Yes, and that is the main reason this exists. A pixel installed on a website only sees people who reach that website. A pixel on the link fires on the click, so an affiliate offer, an app-store listing or a press article can still build your audience.

Four, each set per link: Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel, Google Analytics 4 and Google Tag Manager. Paste the ID for each platform you use and the tag fires on the click, with no code on the destination site.

Yes. Paste your GA4 Measurement ID into the link and the tag fires on the click. It is a separate measurement point from the GA4 property on your website, and it is the only way GA4 can see a click that never reaches a page you have tagged.

No. There is no retargeting-pixel row anywhere in Bitly’s pricing comparison and no Bitly documentation for attaching one to a short link. ClikSo includes Meta, TikTok, GA4 and Google Tag Manager pixels from its Starter plan.

No. Cloaking hides the destination from the visitor or shows different content to different requesters. A ClikSo link with a pixel sends the visitor to exactly the destination you configured, and the browser address bar shows that destination once they arrive.

Starter and above, which is $4.99 per month billed yearly or $6.99 billed monthly. Pixels are not on the Free plan. Click analytics, which is a different thing, is on every plan including Free.
