# Update a tag

`PUT https://app.clik.so/api/tags/{id}`

> **In short:** Renames a tag or changes its colour. Send at least one of `name` or `color`.

## You need

* **API key permission:** `write`
* **Workspace role:** editor or higher
* **Plan:** any plan, including Free

## Parameters

## Request body

| `name`  | string         | no       | A new name. Cannot be `null` or empty. 1–10 characters                  |
| `color` | string or null | no       | A new colour. `null` or `""` removes it. Pattern `^(#[0-9a-fA-F]{6})?$` |

## Common errors

| Status | Code               | When                                                                                                     |
| ------ | ------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 401    | `UNAUTHORIZED`     | The API key is missing, malformed or unknown.                                                            |
| 403    | `FORBIDDEN`        | The key only has Read permission, or its creator is a viewer in this workspace.                          |
| 404    | `NOT_FOUND`        | No tag with this id exists in the key's workspace.                                                       |
| 422    | `VALIDATION_ERROR` | Neither field was sent, `name` is empty, null or longer than 10 characters, or `color` is not `#rrggbb`. |
| 429    | `RATE_LIMITED`     | The key went over its per-minute request limit.                                                          |

## Good to know

* Fields you leave out keep their value.
* `color: null` or `color: ""` removes the colour. `name` cannot be cleared.
* `link_count` is the real number of links carrying the tag.
